Activism can take the form of many shapes. Activism is not limited to the stereotypical image of picketing or rallying. Activism is also not exclusive to large charities such as PETA, Invisible Children, or Greenpeace. Activism is also not only a recent phenomenon. Many associate activism with highly publicized movements such as Occupy WallStreet and the current topic “trending” is the debate concerning vaccines for newborns and autism, however anyone who believes there is an injustice and puts efforts into relieving that injustice can be considered an activist.
One can be an activist through volunteering their time to a cause they believe is worthy. There is also a very political facet of activism one can choose to partake in. Writing letters and calling congressmen and other politicians and direct lobbying can also be considered a form of activism. The absence of “action”, which is boycotting , can also be viewed as an effective form of activism. The term “grassroots movement” is also gaining popularity, especially in the recent years. When an issue begins as a grassroots movement, it means that it springs from the local level. For example, many of the Arab Springs movements began as grassroots movements, and once the conflict gained more popularity and support, it became a full blown revolution.
